Strong confidence and high productivity generating growth in Selby

Confidence breeds confidence, so the saying goes.  This is certainly the case for the Selby district.

Right at the heart of Yorkshire, the area is proving itself as one of the main engines of growth for the North.

Business confidence figures compiled by the Leeds City Region LEP highlight the area as having one of the highest confidence levels from existing businesses. Separate figures from the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding LEP, meanwhile, rate productivity from Selby district’s businesses as the highest in that patch.

With significant new developments in the pipeline, businesses have every right to feel proud of being based in the Selby district.

The Create Yorkshire hub at Church Fenton – between York and Leeds – is part of Yorkshire’s rising importance in film and TV production, digital and technology industries, with the move of Channel 4 to the region too.

Sherburn2 is one of the most significant new business development sites in the north of England and the redevelopment of the former Kellingley Colliery is set to bring a boost of over £200m to Yorkshire’s economy.

Looking to the future, with Drax Power in the area Selby district is right at the heart of the UK’s green energy revolution.

Drax is home to the development of world-leading carbon capture technology that has the potential to revolutionise manufacturing across the UK and help the country achieve it’s carbon neutral target by 2050.

Companies are investing heavily in the district, including L&G Homes at Sherburn. This plant will deliver high quality modular homes across the UK.

And at Tadcaster, a town with a strong brewing tradition, Heineken has invested heavily in its John Smith’s plant, helping to create new good quality jobs.

“Together, these opportunities put the Selby district at the heart of new growth across the north,” explained Selby District Council’s executive member with responsibility for economic development, Councillor David Buckle.

He added: “It’s supported by a great quality of life too, which helps our businesses to recruit and retain the best talent.”
