Yorkshire’s top 20 technology companies are revealed

The region’s most pioneering and innovative technology companies in the Mills & Reeve Top Tech: Yorkshire have now been revealed.

Launched in September, in partnership with TheBusinessdesk.com, Top Tech: Yorkshire is designed to celebrate dynamic companies which are putting the region on the map as a growing hub for technological development and innovation.

That may be by developing world leading technology, disrupting the market, or using technology and services to give their clients a competitive edge.

Entrants were judged on technological innovation, leadership, growth and financial performance, client service and delivery and employee engagement.

Entries were received from a diverse range of technology companies, from SME’s to large PLCs, from across the region, each demonstrating why their cutting-edge technology deserved a place.

The expert panel, made up of some of the leaders in the technology sector, spent many hours deliberating each entry.

Competition was fierce, however, after some deliberation, the entries were whittled down and 20 were selected for inclusion. A further seven companies were highlighted as ‘stars of the future’.

Top Tech: Yorkshire was launched last night at The Shears Yard in Leeds, where the entrants celebrated with all things Yorkshire including gin and ales from the region.

Among those listed in the Top Tech: Yorkshire was Leeds-based RapidSpike.

Gav Winter, CEO at the company, said: “It is always good to be recognised as an innovator and we’re in great company in the report. There are some fantastic companies in the Top Tech: Yorkshire, and it demonstrates the vibrancy of the region’s technology scene and how its businesses are flying the flag for Yorkshire on the global stage.”

Laura Smith, founder and CEO of Slanted Theory, which was hailed as a ‘star of the future’ added: “As a fast-growing start-up it is a huge achievement to be singled out in the Top Tech: Yorkshire.

“We are delighted to be featured among the region’s leading technology firms and proud to play a part in promoting Sheffield’s technology sector.”

Mills & Reeve partner Paul Johnson said: “Once again the response has been fantastic, in fact this year we had twice as many entrants as last year.

“What I think is brilliant is that all the businesses decided to enter themselves to help promote tech in this region. We received entries from a diverse range of dynamic companies across the whole region.

“The quality of entrants has been excellent and, not only were we impressed by the cutting-edge and innovative technology, but by their passion for the region and the determination by these ambitious companies to put Yorkshire on the map as a major player on the national and international stage.”

The Top Tech judging panel included: Richard Carter, managing director, Equiniti Credit Services; Chelsea Boothroyd, engagement manager, Nexus; Paul Johnson, partner in the corporate team at the Leeds office of Mills & Reeve; Peter Rowe, consultant, WH Ireland; Richard Faulkner, managing director, technology banking at Silicon Valley Bank; Stuart Clarke, festival director, Leeds Digital Festival; Heather Niven, business and innovation consultant; Mel Kanarek, director and co-founder, Sheffield Digital.
