Planned new supermarket at £200m mixed use development

A planning application to bring an Aldi store to the £200m Brough South scheme has been submitted to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The application marks a significant milestone, with plans for a mixed-use development first approved by the council back in October 2013.

Since this initial approval, which included a new food store, homes, a primary school as well as retail, leisure and healthcare uses, separate applications bringing forward the new primary school and first phase of residential development have been granted consent.

The latest proposals, which would significantly improve choice for local shoppers, would create up to 40 full and part-time jobs for the local community.

The store, which will benefit from access via the recent extension of Moor Road, will be located at the heart of the mixed-use development.

An Aldi spokesman said: “This is an excellent opportunity to continue the progress that has been made on what is an economically important site.

“We are making a significant investment in the area and an Aldi store has the potential to provide local jobs for local people. With existing stores in Willerby and Hull, we firmly believe this new store will be popular with the local community.

“The site has been recognised for its strategic importance and these proposals will help to create a genuine mixed-use scheme that incorporates the necessary community, leisure and retail elements essential to support a vibrant and sustainable business and residential community.

“We will now work closely with the council during the planning process, whilst we have also written to hundreds of local residents to glean their thoughts on an Aldi at Brough South.”

The Horncastle Group is bringing the Brough South development forward on behalf of the Brough South Consortium, which consists of the developers, local landowners and developers Alma Jordan (Builders) Ltd, Riplingham Estates Ltd and BAE Systems.

Ian Hodges, managing director of the Horncastle Group, said: “The supermarket is an important component of scheme and we are delighted to announce we have agreed the deal with Aldi to develop a food store at Brough South.

“Similar to the primary school, this is once again well ahead of schedule and the planning obligations for the project.

“We are confident the new store will be very popular when it opens as it brings more choice to the local community.”

The supermarket will be located on the south of Bluebird Way, opposite South Hunsley Primary at the entrance of the retail, leisure and commercial zone of the project.
