My Yorkshire: Matt Pugh, of Hägen Wolf

Matt Pugh is the managing partner of Hägen Wolf, a specialist property litigation firm that operates nationally from offices in Leeds and London.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I currently live in Menston but I’m from Wigan originally. I get stick from family and friends from both sides of the Pennines. Although I’ve spent more than half my life in Yorkshire, apparently I still don’t qualify for a Yorkshire passport.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

I enjoy spending time outdoors and a walk around Burnsall is a great way to spend a Sunday. It has picture-postcard views and great pub by the river.

What is still on your “to-do” list in the region?

I’ve always wanted to have a go at Ghyll scrambling at HowStean Gorge. It seems to be a fantastic way to explore a beautiful part of Yorkshire.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

I had a lovely meal at the Box Tree in Ilkley. The service was excellent and it felt very intimate. I liked the combination of classic cooking with locally sourced ingredients. The handmade chocolates at the end of the evening were memorable.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

Suspicion. It comes in handy for a career in the law.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

Patrick Stewart. I’m a huge Trekky and I’ve seen him in various roles for the RSC.

First experience of Yorkshire (for non-Yorkshire folk)

I moved to York from university in Newcastle. York is great because it feels like a village but has all the facilities of a city. I enjoyed the great pubs and culture, along with fantastic surroundings.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

The commute into Leeds is only getting worse and it needs to be addressed if we are to continue to grow as a city and region.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?

As a Wigan fan, I’d have to say a decent rugby league team.
