Extra funding needed for regeneration projects

Councillors in Hull are considering requests for additional funding to support two ongoing projects at significant buildings in Beverley Road.

Additional essential works on the Brunswick Arcade site at 52a and 54 Beverley Road were identified through an open tender exercise.

These works are required to make the building safe and address structural problems in order to provide permanent residential and retail development at the site. This work requires a further £605,000.

At Beverley Road Baths, work is underway to refurbish the centre to create a new larger gymnasium, as well as renovate the existing gym.

Once complete, the scheme will also create new and improved steam and sauna facilities, alongside internal refurbishments to the poolside and all changing facilities.

Other works include renovation of the main reception and essential maintenance to the Grade II-listed building with a new roof and roof lights as well as refurbished windows.

The mechanical and electrical systems are also to be replaced and upgraded to modern day standards.

While the project has been in progress, additional essential and recommended repairs have been identified therefore further funding is required.

Councillor Daren Hale, Hull City Council’s portfolio holder for economic investment and regeneration, said: “After designating Beverley Road a heritage area, it is wholly right that the council makes sure that the Brunswick Arcade buildings do not let the side down.

“This spending will resolve eyesore issues at the bottom of Beverley Road, where the scaffolding has been up for years, and the council had to step in and take ownership.

“Beverley Road Baths is a grand historical building, and we are investing to ensure it is here for the next 100 years.

“We always said we would build infrastructure to support the economy, and this provides vital jobs at a time when they are essential.”

If approved work will begin at Brunswick Arcade in the New Year.
