£14.5m city gateway project approved

City of York council has approved plans to transform the front of York station into a fitting gateway to the city.

The project will see the removal of the redundant Queen Street Bridge to create space for a number of changes including an improved transport interchange with a wider cycle lane and part pedestrianisation of Tea Room Square.

The development received £14.5m of funding in March 2020 as part of Leeds City Region’s successful bid to the government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

One part of the plans which raised concerns was the inclusion of a 636-space multi storey car park.

The chair of York Green Party Tom Franklin, highlighted that the city needed to reduce car parking.

Stating: “If you voted for the climate emergency in 2019, I don’t see how you can vote for the multi-storey car park now.”
