Tributes paid to former council leader and Lord Mayor

Bradford Council is mourning the death of former council leader and Lord Mayor Tony Cairns, who has died at the age of 89.

Cairns was elected as Labour Councillor for Tong in 1984 and served City Hall until 2010.

He was leader of the council between 1994 and 1997 and Lord Mayor, along with his late wife Jean, from 1997-98. He was also awarded an OBE by The Queen in 2007.

Cairns served on many council committees and was at one time chairman of Social Services and Policy and Resources. He also served as chief whip and chairman of the Labour Group.

On outside bodies, he served as deputy chairman of Leeds Bradford International Airport and sat on Bradford University Council.

Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said: “Tony Cairns was one of Bradford’s greats, he served the district in many different roles, as leader, chief whip and as Lord Mayor.

“He was extremely well respected by all who knew him. Bradford owes him a huge debt of gratitude for all he did for us.

“His passing marks the loss of a dear friend and colleague for many across the political divide. His significant contribution will not be forgotten.”

Current Bradford Lord Mayor, Cllr Doreen Lee, said: “I am deeply saddened. I have lost a very dear friend, a good mentor and a valued vice-chair of my Appeal Committee.

“I will miss Tony greatly and my sympathies go out to his son and family.”
