University to sell second accommodation site to hit environmental targets

The second site in as many months of former student accommodation at the University of Hull is being put up for sale to support the institution’s ambition of being carbon neutral by 2027.

The Lawns, which is on Harland Way in Cottingham, extends to approximately 29.44 acres in total and is being marketed by Savills on behalf of the university.

It follows the marketing of the site at Ferens Hall, also a former halls of residence, which has been allocated for new build residential development and lies to the east of The Lawns.

With the buildings themselves no longer environmentally efficient, the decision to sell both sites is considered vital in supporting the university’s ambition of being carbon neutral by 2027.

It follows the building of a new, premium on-campus accommodation facility that creates one central on-site community for its students.

Comprising six, three-storey Grade II residential blocks, The Lawns is bordered by Cottingham High School & Sixth Form to the west and lies approximately 3.5 miles from Hull city centre.

A sale is being targeted during this calendar year with a residential future considered most likely, subject to the necessary consent.

Proceeds from any sale are expected to be reinvested by the university into projects that will improve sustainability on its campus and develop its wider offering to students and alumni.

Matthew Jones, director in Savills’ Leeds-based development team, who is handling the sale, said: “The availability of The Lawns not only represents the latest strategic step in the university’s environmental ambitions but also a tremendously exciting opportunity for house builders and residential developers alike.”
