Scarborough Group International (SGI) has appointed Stephen Marriott as director of operations at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park following its development agreement with Sheffield City Council to build on the significant progress made to date in creating a world-class community for the health, wellbeing, sport and activity sectors.

In his new role, Marriott will oversee the development of the company’s operations at the Park, including the building of strong community links.

He arrives at SGI with an extensive background in key leadership roles in the hospitality sector, and has previously worked with SGI as general manager of the Copthorne Hotel Bramall Lane in Sheffield.

Central to the fabric of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is the quality of its working environment, and the creation of an inspirational community to promote enterprise, innovation and wellbeing. Marriott’s experience in hospitality and management will be key to establishing and evolving the facilities and services at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park for its working population and its outreach to the local community.

Marriott, added: “We have an opportunity to create a real sense of community with local residents and businesses as we deliver the new stadium, offices, and retail space at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and I’m excited to be getting involved at such an early stage of the scheme. Being part of the next phase of development is extremely exciting.”

SGI is now bringing forward a masterplan for a first phase of up to 850,000 sq ft of workspace and ancillary facilities across an 80-acre zone. Already on site and due for completion at the beginning of 2022 is the Legacy Stadium, and over the coming months SGI will set out its plans for what will be the heart of the Park, including an Enterprise Centre to support start-up and growing businesses in the health, wellbeing, sport and activity sectors.

Marriott’s appointment follows the announcement that a new Chief Executive has been appointed for Legacy Park Ltd, the company set up to facilitate delivery of the Olympic legacy themes at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. Dr Chris Low will work closely with SGI, to drive the development of a world-class health and wellbeing research eco-system and further build R&D capacity, attracting and supporting global health and wellbeing companies to invest and co-locate on the Park.

EY has appointed three associate partners in Yorkshire and the North East from within EY, reinforcing the firm’s continued investment in its regional business and commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.

Tim Vance has been promoted to associate partner in EY-Parthenon’s turnaround and restructuring strategy team. Vance joined EY in 2006 and has over 15 years’ experience advising management teams and financial institutions.

Also promoted is Jon Scott, he works in tax, focussing on international tax and transaction services, combining 16 years’ international experience delivering technology solutions with functional knowledge of profitability models across tax and finance. He joined EY in 2019, with a wealth of experience across platform, solutions & intelligence (PSI) and has broadened the firm’s operational transfer pricing offering to address clients’ needs for integrated solutions to manage tax compliance, financial management and regulatory reporting.

David Baggaley rounds out the promotions, working within tax his focus is on business tax services. Baggaley joined EY in 2007 after graduating from the University of Newcastle and now leads the private tax team in the North East and Yorkshire, focussed on looking after privately backed companies as well as individuals and their assets.

Nationally, EY is strengthening its UK Partnership with 103 new equity Partners – an increase of almost 60% compared to last year. This includes 65 Partner promotions, which is the firm’s largest intake of home-grown talent in the last ten years, along with 38 external hires.

Law firm Berwins has added to its leadership team with the appointment of a new director.

Danielle Day, who also heads the firms’ well regarded family law unit, joins the Board from July.

The achievement is the latest in a string of promotions for Danielle, who has been recognised as a ‘rising star’ within the region by the independent panel at industry guide Legal500 and her peers, with shortlisting for a Yorkshire Legal Award.

Senior partner Paul Berwin said: “Danielle has made a fantastic contribution to Berwins during her time with the firm. She has combined the development of a bourgeoning professional reputation with initiatives which have advanced both the firm and the legal profession more
widely. Latterly, she has proven herself to be a shrewd manager through leadership of a Family Law team ranked in the top tier of those in the region by industry guides. Her appointment to the board recognises that and her ability to deliver support the continued growth of the business.”

The announcement comes after an impressive 12 months for Berwins, which has seen investment in people, processes and technology matched by growth in all areas of work.

Reflecting on the appointment, Danielle added: “As a firm, Berwins is in an exciting place to be. Having navigated the unprecedented circumstances the past 16 months brought, the business is in a great place continue supporting clients with the highest levels of both service and advice.”

A partnerships specialist from one of the first businesses to join University of Leeds innovation hub Nexus, has been appointed to promote and manage the hub’s growing membership.

Barry Singleton has been appointed to the role of business engagement officer with Nexus, joins its team of engagement and collaboration experts to further develop the the hub’s business membership pipeline.

Singleton has more than 20 years’ experience in business development, customer service and communications roles for national and international organisations, and joins Nexus from Canadian headquartered AI and human behaviour specialist Scaled Insights where he was chief relationship officer.

His experience with Scaled Insights has provided him first-hand experience of Nexus and how it can help start-ups and entrepreneurs to develop and grow.

“I’m delighted to be joining the Nexus team whose advice, support and expertise have been invaluable to me from a client perspective,” said Singleton.

“Now I can share that lived experience with other Nexus businesses and prospective members, outlining the support they can access and benefits they can enjoy from being part of the Nexus community.

“We’re a true community of like-minded businesses and I’ll be able to offer a client’s eye view of the value which can be achieved through connecting and collaborating with the research and innovation expertise at the University of Leeds and wider regional business support networks.
