Developer bids to construct commercial units next to shopping centre

Property company British Land has lodged detailed plans to build four commercial premises on a site next to Meadowhall Shopping Centre, Sheffield.

The wider site already has outline planning permission for more than a one million sq ft of space suitable for leisure, car showroom, hotel, industrial, office and retail uses.

British Land’s application relates to plot one of the site and is for commercial units measuring nearly 240,000 sq ft in total.

These units would range in size from 17,200 sq ft to 120,500 sq ft and would be available for retail, industrial, storage and distribution uses.

There would also be office accommodation, services yards and parking.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application explains the proposals for plot one would create a “high quality scheme” with sustainable and aesthetically pleasing buildings.

It adds there is local, regional and national shortfalls in availability of these types of properties, adding: “The site is ideally situated to respond to this and the existing Outline Consent provides for development in this use.”
