Six locations to be prioritised for £75m worth of cultural funding

Six places in Yorkshire and the Humber will be placed on a priority list for cultural funding as part of the Government’s levelling up drive.

The news comes as the Culture Secretary confirmed that by 2025 areas outside London will benefit from a £75m boost in cultural funding.

Cultural investment outside London via the Arts Council is expected to rise to almost £250m by 2025 – the equivalent to a 19% increase by the final year of the Spending Review period.

Arts Council England, which will oversee the distribution of the funds, will see its overall budget increase over the period.

The areas in Yorkshire and the Humber are part of more than 100 ‘Levelling Up for Culture Places’ which will be targeted.

These locations include: Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, East Riding, Kirklees, and Selby.

Arts Minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay said: “I have had the pleasure of visiting a number of brilliant organisations in and around Yorkshire which are doing fantastic work, but I know there’s even more which could be done to make sure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the life-changing experience of arts and culture.

“That’s what the changes we’re making today are all about.”

The Government says it will also shortly announce the recipients of £48m from the latest round of the Cultural Investment Fund package.

This funding will go to more than 50 organisations, the majority of which will be outside London. Libraries, museums and creative projects in areas in need of levelling up will benefit.
