Recipients revealed for Queen’s Jubilee birthday honours list 2022

Yorkshire and Humber residents active in the tourism industry, education, sports and the arts are among those honoured in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours List 2022.

In tribute to The Queen, they have been rewarded for their outstanding contributions to their sectors.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “This historic Platinum Jubilee is not only a celebration of the monarch but of the qualities she possesses.

“The honours she confers this week reflect many of those qualities that have been invaluable from all different walks of life and to communities across the UK.

“I pay tribute to all of this year’s winners. Their stories of courage and compassion are an inspiration to us all.”

Awarded a CBE this year is David Nixon OBE, from Menston, lately artistic director at Northern Ballet, for services to Dance.

Knighthoods were awarded to Julian Hartley, chief executive at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, for services to Healthcare, and Martyn Oliver, of North Yorkshire, chief executive officer, Outwood Grange Academies Trust, for services to Education.

On the OBE list from our region is Ioannis Koursis, principal and chief executive officer at Barnsley College, chosen for his services to further education.

He responded: “I am deeply thrilled, and humbled, to have been recommended to receive this Honour and would like to express my gratitude to those who nominated me.

“This honour recognises one’s contribution to public service – but how can you ever make transformational difference without the strong support of those around you?

“So, I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to my family and to everyone who has enabled me to do what I am proud to say I love doing.”

Doncaster-born businessman and philanthropist Tariq Shah, was awarded an OBE for philanthropy and services to charity.

Shah, of third generation family business Vigo Group, has carried out extensive work with the Prince’s Trust, the Sleep Charity and other causes and has also focused on making Doncaster a thriving place to live and work.

He said: “I have always believed in grasping opportunities and helping others do the same is a passion of mine.

“I am totally committed to charitable causes and I also love Doncaster and want to see it take its rightful place in levelling up. The wonderful people I work with all share in this award acknowledgement as without them I just couldn’t achieve what I do.”

Also presented with OBEs are:

Professor John Barrett, of York, Professor of Energy and Climate Policy, University of Leeds. For services to Climate Change Assessment.

Professor Paul Johnson, of Leeds, Professor of Sociology and Executive Dean, University of Leeds. For services to Equality, Diversity and Human Rights.

Professor Carol Gabriel, of York, Higher Education Academy, York St John University. For services to
Higher Education.

MBE awardees include Dr Deborah Bullivant, of Sheffield, founder and chief executive officer of Grimm and Co, who has been honoured for services to Children and Young People’s Literacy in Rotherham.

She said: “I am truly humbled to receive this honour. Grimm & Co has been a real joy of a journey and seeing the thousands of children the charity has already helped has been wonderful.

“The charity is a real team effort and we’ve worked with wonderful partners and funders over the years who have helped us to achieve great things.”

She was joined on the MBE list by:

Austin Marsden, of Sheriff Hutton in North Yorkshire, lately founder and executive chair, Ridgeway Partners. For services to Business and to Charity.

Nigel Wilkinson, of York, managing director, Windermere Lake Cruises Ltd. For services to Tourism and to the Economy in Cumbria.

Dr Olukayode Adegbembo, of Swanland, East Riding of Yorkshire, chair of governors, Scarborough TEC. For services to Education.

Christopher Slater, of York, associate director of commercial and procurement, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. For services to NHS Procurement during Covid-19.

Presented with a British Empire Medal were:

Lydia Fairman, of York, lead capability and development manager, Network Rail. For services to STEM subjects and to vulnerable people during Covid-19.

Henry Filloux-Bennett, of Huddersfield, chief executive, Lawrence Batley Theatre. For services to the Theatre and to the community in Huddersfield.

Kristine Green, of Grimsby, director, Grimsby Town Football Club and chair, Mariners Trust. For services to Association Football in North East Lincolnshire.

Carol Thomas, of Hull. For services to Association Football and charity.
