Cleantech sector veteran appointed to chair hydrogen development company

Graham Cooley

Leeds-based geoenergy company and owner of hydrogen developer H2 Green, Getech, says Dr Graham Cooley has today been appointed chair of H2 Green.

Cooley will assist H2 Green to expand and develop its portfolio of hydrogen and renewable energy projects and maximise its potential as a ‘pure play’ UK project developer.

He led Sheffield-headquartered ITM Power as chief executive officer from 2009 to 2022. ITM Power was the first hydrogen related company to be listed on the London Stock Market.

Cooley was instrumental in delivering key strategic partnership agreements with global energy partners that transformed ITM Power from a relatively small business into a leader in the hydrogen market.

He has been involved with a wide range of companies nearly all connected to the cleantech sector. And he has led numerous transactions and raised substantial investment capital.

He was CEO of Sensortec Ltd, founder of Metalysis Ltd, a spin out from Cambridge University, and founding CEO of Antenova Ltd.

Cooley has worked with the UK Government and is a member of the Government’s Hydrogen Advisory Council, and a Board member of the trade body, RenewableUK.

Richard Bennett, Getech executive-chair, said: “I am genuinely excited to welcome Graham and we look forward to him applying his vision and experience to developing H2Green.

“His appointment will also allow me to focus more on the development of Getech’s core business of utilising its valuable proprietary skills and data to support the development of geoenergy projects such as CCS, geothermal and the search for crucial minerals that are vital to energy transition.”

Cooley said “I believe the H2 Green team to be first class and their ‘pure play’ UK project developer status alongside the projects they have gathered to date, makes them a highly attractive proposition, one I believe I can help reach its full potential.”

Luke Johnson, managing director of H2 Green, added: “This is a very significant appointment for us and one that reflects well on what we have achieved so far.

“Graham understands what is required to be successful and will give excellent guidance for the future development of the company.

“The UK government has set a strategic goal of domestically producing 10GW of hydrogen by 2030 and we want H2 Green to be a key player in delivering this goal.”
