Earthworks specialist invests to fuel ‘aggressive’ growth plan

ZTL Contracting has unveiled its latest machinery upgrades as it continues to expand its fleet and project capabilities for larger construction sites.

The Wakefield and Middlesbrough earthworks firm has added a second Wirtgen stabiliser to its fleet following a range of successes through the last 12 months as ZTL pursues larger contracts through remediation packages.

The Wirtgen Stabilisers allow ZTL to provide clients with soil stabilisation solutions, reducing the need for aggregate materials to be brought onto sites, and the associated impact of transportation to and from locations.

The newest Wirtgen purchase comes off the back of the recent earthworks and remediation work at Knottingley for Maclaren’s Konnect 62 project and Teesworks’ Southbank Quay scheme for clients Grahams, as well as a number of new projects with clients GMI and Glencar.

Business development director, Matthew Exley, said: “The success of the earthworks and remediation projects such as those at Knottingley and Teesworks’ Southbank Quay scheme have not only demonstrated our expertise in handling complex projects but have also enabled us to reinvest in the future.

“Our latest Wirtgen purchase is a testament to our commitment to promoting sustainable practices throughout the construction industry.”

In quarter four of 2022, ZTL Contracting also incorporated a new range of Liebherr Generation 8 Crawler dozers to enhance its fleet.

ZTL, which is part of the Applebridge Family group of construction companies, is continuing its investment plans, with an estimated £1.3m to be spent by the end of April and a total of £3m to be invested throughout 2023.

This incorporates a range of new plant including Rolling Dynamic Compaction (RDC) Rollers, five 30-tonne Liebherr dump trucks, and a third Wirtgen scheduled for late in quarter four

The recent acquisition of machinery supports the wider Applebridge Family’s objectives to improve efficiency and sustainability throughout 2023 and beyond as it aims to become leaders in sustainable construction practices.

Earlier this year, the Applebridge Family recorded a combined £80m turnover from its eight operational companies.

ZTL Contracting’s commercial director, Wayne Morris, said: “Over the last two years, construction has seen a massive boom; many of our customers have expanded their portfolios, taking on larger and evermore complex sites.

“To support our customers’ growth, ZTL has set out on an aggressive growth plan.

“This investment strategy has involved the purchase of the Liebherr Dozers and our Wirtgen Stabiliser but they certainly won’t be the last.”
