Masterplan aims to create thriving city centre

Details of eight key Wakefield regeneration projects will go on public display this month.

These include: work on the site of the Old Westgate Station to create more office space and a hotel; Kirkgate Neighbourhood Gateway, an area which will be redeveloped into a new urban village with over 80 new homes; and a new purpose for Cathedral Square as a space which can host outdoor events.

Wakefield Council is also holding a consultation to find out what people think of the existing Bull Ring, and how they would like to see it improved.

The ‘City Masterplan Exhibition 2024’ opens on 9 January and will feature pictures and information of the projects which have already begun or are in the planning stage.

These works are designed to support existing businesses and attract new ones, bringing more investment and jobs to the city.

Councillor Michael Graham, cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “We want the city centre to thrive and be a place which offers a variety of things for people to do, somewhere our residents are always proud to call home.

“We want people to be invested in the city’s future. Together, we can continue to make the city a vibrant place for the communities of Wakefield and the wider district.”

The exhibition takes place in the former USC shop unit at Trinity Walk, opposite TK Maxx. It runs from 9 January until 12 January, between 10am-4pm, and on 13 January, from 10am until 2pm.
