Plans lodged for tissue factory which would create hundreds of jobs

A full planning application has been lodged for a tissue factory in East Yorkshire.

As previously reported, Metsä Tissue has chosen Goole for a proposed new tissue paper mill, which would support up to 400 direct jobs.

Metsä Tissue along with Wykeland Group – which currently has the long-term development rights to the site – have submitted a planning application for the facility to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Once complete, the factory off Rawcliffe Road, would cover about three million sq ft and would have capacity to produce 240,000 tons of tissue paper.

A detailed planning statement accompanying the application explains: “The proposal represents a significant opportunity to kick-start the delivery of the Goole Freeport tax site, which will bring significant investment and employment opportunities to the region and deliver one of the largest tissue paper mills in the UK.

“There is a clear employment need in this location and the proposed Tissue Paper Mill Facility will make a significant contribution towards delivering employment land in the Humber region.

“Once the facility is completed it will generate up to 400 direct jobs, including training and apprenticeship opportunities and jobs ranging from operatives to management level roles together with additional jobs relating to security, haulage and other partnered roles in the area.

“It will also have a knock-on effect in terms of local supply chain, attracting additional expenditure and promote further growth.

“This significant investment in Goole demonstrates Metsä Tissue’s long-term commitment to the UK and the region as one of the largest tissue markets in Europe and would significantly reduce the quantity of tissue products that are currently imported into the UK and Ireland each year, increasing the country’s self-sufficiency in this sector by 30 per cent.”
