Revised plans lodged for 240 apartments on former swimming pool site

Updated plans for 240 new homes on the site of the former Barbican swimming pool, in York, have been submitted by housebuilder Persimmon.

The proposals have now been validated by City of York Council, meaning that a public consultation can now get underway.

240 apartments will be delivered on the site with 53 to be transferred to a registered housing provider.

The site comprises two parcels of land, with the main area to the east of the Barbican and Staycity Aparthotel comprising approximately 2.14 acres, along with a smaller plot which fronts onto Fawcett Street to the south west of the Barbican Centre and comprising about 0.12 acres.

The buildings on the larger site will be no higher than the existing StayCity aparthotel.

On the smaller site there are plans to build 12 apartments with a space on the ground floor for community use. The operator and exact use of this space will be shaped by a separate public consultation.

A Persimmon Yorkshire spokesman said: “We’re pleased to have been able to submit these revised plans for the Barbican site.

“We’ve worked extensively over the last two years with the council, architects and engineers to produce plans worthy of this location.

“Members of the public can now comment on the plans via the council’s planning public access portal.

“A consultation website will also be launched in the coming weeks – further details about this will be announced shortly.”
