Businesses shine at ABDN awards

A HOST of the region’s businesses were recognised at this year’s Asian Business Development Network’s (ABDN) annual dinner in Leeds.

Guests at the Royal Armouries included Lord Lieutenant Dr Ingrid Roscoe, Lord Mayor of Leeds Judith Elliott, Baroness Warsi MP, Linda Pollard MBE, Fabian Hamilton MP, Greg Mulholland MP and Terry Hodgkinson, chairman of Yorkshire Forward.

Julie Meyer, chief executive of Ariadne Capital and online Dragon’s Den fame, Baroness Sayeda Warsi, MP Shadow Minister for Community Cohesion and Social Action and vice chairwoman of the Conservative Party, Tony Pedder, chairman of Sheffield NHS and of Business Link Yorkshire, were key speakers at the event, which was hosted by Asian comedian Shazia Mirza.

The Business of the Year award went to Bradford-based food business Mumtaz Ventures, city living specialists Squarefoot Apartments of Bradford picked up SME Business of the Year 2010 and Manni Hussain of Leeds-based property and construction specialists Cubic Acquisitions took home the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

PEC Building and Shop Fitting was crowned the Best Company to Work For and Leeds-based JTM Sevice scooped the Going Green title.

Farina Tayub of home services provider Caremark Leeds won Female Entrepreneur of the Year and TREE, a not-for-profit organisation that designs and installs renewable energy systems and energy saving technology to reduce carbon emissions and energy bills, was announced Most Promising New Business.

Jagmohani Manku from Milun Women’s Centre was recognised with the Service to the Community title while Mohammed Aslam, founder of the Aagrah restaurant chain, won the Breaking Barriers Lifetime Achievement Award.

ABDN chairman Arshad Chaudhry  said: “Successful British Asian businesses are making a significant contribution to the British economy across many sectors, it is truly inspirational to see so many individuals in one gathering.”
