In Brief: PackCare claims R&D relief after innovation; Royal approval for PLB; Tata teams up with THMA

RECYCLING company PackCare has claimed substantial tax relief after developing a breakthrough in plastic recycling.

The Leeds-based industrial packaging re-conditioning specialist has spent £350,000 devising a system which makes virtually all highly contaminated plastic recyclable.

Robert Solyom, a partner at accountancy firm Brown Butler, worked alongside the company to help it claim research and development (R&D) relief against its corporation tax liability.

Peter Hunt, managing director of Garforth-based WasteCare Group, which owns PackCare, said the company had developed a pre-wash and wash process allowing contamination to be extracted from drums and bulk containers.

Mr Solyom said: “We have a great deal of experience in helping numerous businesses in a wide range of sectors secure R&D tax relief. We were therefore delighted to play a part in PackCare gaining from its innovative flair and determination to solve a long-standing industry problem.

TATA Steel has teamed up with marine engineering and energy organisation Team Humber Marine Alliance as they both target the UK’s growing offshore wind turbine market.

Joining Team Humber Marine Alliance, which represents more than 140 companies from around the Humber region, will allow Tata Steel to build on the significant investment it has put into new equipment and machinery at its Scunthorpe facilities.

As part of the global diversified Tata Group, Tata Steel wants to develop the market for its steel products and services in the renewable energy sector, said Phil Knowles, commercial manager power generation and renewables.

“We have made major developments in the Humber region in the past 12 months including the creation of a dedicated wind tower hub in Scunthorpe to process and distribute up to 200,000 tonnes each year of steel plate.”

“We recognise that for things to work there has to be more collaborative effort from everyone

involved, a joint voice, and a shared, collective approach, that will spark opportunities.”
