CALLS have been made for a ‘minister for manufacturing’ by James Newman, chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.
Speaking at an event hosted by law firm Nabarro and attended by Lord Green, Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Mr Newman said: “We need a ‘minister for manufacturing’ to give more focus to the sector which is a significant contributor to UK exports.
“Whilst the Government understands large companies, I am less convinced that they know how the key supply chains work and the assistance they require.”
Lord Green said: “Sheffield companies are exporting their way out of recession. The volume of export documents that the Chamber processed in the first ten months of this financial year was up 25% on the previous year.”
