The Green Economy: Carbon capture a ‘short term solution’

YORKSHIRE needs to look beyond carbon capture and storage as the UK looks to reduce the impact of energy generation, according to experts.

The county is at the cutting edge of moves to build energy generation capacity that can capture and store harmful gases.

These include 2Co Energy’s Don Valley Power Project which would see a new coal-fired power station built with captured gases piped to the North Sea to be used to extract oil before being stored under the sea bed.

Natasha Luther-Jones, partner at DLA Piper’’s Leeds office, said: “As a region we need to maximise this opportunity.

“Investment is now the main factor holding back CCS developments.”

But while Yorkshire is well placed to capitalise on moves to carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, there are also warnings that this will only be “stop-gap” solution until other technologies are developed.

Prof Lenny Koh, director of the Centre for Energy, Environment and Sustainability at Sheffield University, said: “We need to develop technology in the short-term to store and capture that carbon and then find new ways to utilise that carbon to make new products and use it for energy generation.”
