Cyber crime protection centre wins funding

SMALL firms across the UK will benefit from funding won in competition by the Sheffield-based Business Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC).

The centre successfully beat off the competition in the e-Crime Prevention category of the Cyber Security Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) run competition, which is funded by the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform (BERR).

The centre’s award-winning project will offer guidance to sole traders, small to medium sized businesses (SMB’s) home workers, non-technical advisers and technical consultants.

David Stockdale, BCRC’s head of unit, said:

“The funding grants us a contract to write three guides on e-Crime prevention for small firms. Also included in the project will be a series of focus groups and case studies on the impact of e-Crime on SMBs.

“It’s a coup for us, so soon after our launch and will enhance our standing nationally.”

Chief Inspector Dave Fortune, police adviser to regional development agency Yorkshire Forward said:

“The BCRC was established to tackle crime against business, one of the fastest growing types of crime.

“This additional funding will enable BCRC to help South Yorkshire’s SMB’s to reduce risk to their company by raising awareness of the steps they need to take to protect it.”

The centre and two other category winners will complete their projects, which will form a significant part of a government white paper on e-Crime, by mid November.

Appropriately, the final work will be presented in December at Bletchley Park, where British Intelligence cracked the Enigma Code during Second World War.
