thebigword translates global wins into 100 jobs

TRANSLATION and interpreting firm thebigword is to create almost 100 jobs after securing a raft of contracts across the globe valued at £12m.

New contracts across Europe, the United States and within the public sector in the UK have created a need for staff to work in the Leeds-based company’s linguist recruitment, customer service, logistics and IT operations.

All the 41 permanent and 51 temporary positions will be based in Yorkshire, with thebigword expecting many of the temporary posts to become permanent from the end of April.

Chief executive Larry Gould said: “This is a great success story for the UK and especially for Leeds.

“We now employ people from 73 countries in 12 offices across nine locations and our Leeds HQ is at the centre of a huge global operation.

“We’re delighted to be able to bring new business to Yorkshire and offer great opportunities for local people.”

thebigword translates 380 million words every year and interprets 14.6 million minutes of speech over the telephone as well as completing 122,000 assignments for face-to-face interpreters.

The jobs boost for the region follows thebigword’s securing of a contract last year to help UK forces in Afghanistan.
