Yorkshire workers failing to re-charge batteries

MORE than a third of workers across Yorkshire fail to take their full holiday entitlement according to a new study.

A quarter of staff take less than 20 days while 6% take 15 days or less as workers shelve their summer plans due to work pressures.

Working Time Regulations mean all employees on working a five day week are entitled to 24 days (rising to 28) in April 2009

The research from Yorkshire Bank  also highlighted that even those who do take their full allocation of holidays are failing to completely switch off.

In Yorkshire, more than three quarters of workers maintain contact with their employers during their holidays, with 24% of people keeping in touch with work continually.

A further 53% are likely to make contact with work at some point during their annual leave.

Kath Myers, regional director for Yorkshire Bank said: “It’s clear that more work needs to be done to ensure that employees take enough time off and maintain a healthy work life balance.

“Although people may be concerned about being seen to take too many holidays, without a proper break individual performance will suffer and employers are more likely to notice mistakes occurring than employees being of work as a result of holidays.”
