Skills push in offshore industry

AN East Yorkshire training company is helping the region benefit from the growth of the offshore industry.

Reach 4 Training, which specialises in offering training opportunities and career advice to individuals seeking employment in the marine technologies and offshore industries, was set up earlier this year and has now launched a range of new e-learning courses to further its offering and help more people gain access to the industry.

Owned by Layton Barr, who also runs Hull’s Atlantis Electronic Services, a firm specialising in meeting the IT and technology needs of commercial marine and yachting industry clients across the globe, Reach 4 Training aims to help those looking to secure employment in the region’s growing offshore industry gain the skills they need to succeed.

Covering everything from marine electronics (including satellite communications systems) to integrated, automated entertainment systems, Reach 4 Training’s courses will be delivered through a combination of e-learning and hands-on, practical training sessions at venues and times to suit the individuals taking part. Places on the courses are available from September.

Mr Barr said: “We offer a range of courses, from introductory to advanced level, working with people who are already in the industry who want to develop or refresh their skills, and with those who are just starting out.

“Our e-learning platform means that people can complete the courses at their own pace, as well as taking part in practical training sessions, which we’ll be staging at venues across the region to ensure that they’re accessible to everyone.

“Because we already work in the marine technologies industry, those who enrol on our courses have the opportunity to gain practical work experience with us and receive meaningful career guidance from people with years of industry experience.

“We are filling a gap in training provision by devising and delivering courses suited to the needs of those who wish to work in the marine technologies and offshore industries. Given that the Humber area is set to become a hub for offshore industries, we believe it’s essential that local people have the chance to access training that will help them to secure employment opportunities.”

The courses are led by industry experts and those who enrol can opt to cover a broad range of subjects relating to marine industry technologies or specialise in a specific area.
