Leeds City Region: Businesses praise Yorkshire

YORKSHIRE businesses have praised the region for its impressive talent.

New law firm on the block, Brilliant Law, launched in January and founder Matthew Briggs said the online-based firm chose Leeds for its base, as it boasts “immense” legal talent.

“We had a blank canvas on where to base Brilliant Law,” he said.

“I built Minster Law to 800 people, so had experience in Yorkshire. Leeds does have immense legal talent plus the value/cost outweighed other areas in the country.”

Technology company NDL has also highlighted the benefits of Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region.

Managing director, Declan Grogan, said Yorkshire’s academic institutions bring “invaluable” benefits to his Wetherby-based software business.

Grogan said that having a primary base in the Leeds City Region together with an additional location in the south means NDL can just as effectively service organisations across the UK.

At the end of last year the company significantly expanded operations at its secondary base in Leatherhead, Surrey, bringing it up to 47 staff.

Declan Grogan NDLGrogan said: “Many of our staff over the years have come from local universities such as Leeds, Hull and York and we continue to enjoy great success working with their undergraduate intern schemes – particularly the University of York.

“We firmly believe that being close to well-regarded academic institutions has been invaluable in recruiting the skilled staff we require, and has played a significant part in our on-going success.”

Matthew Briggs has launched Brilliant LawHowever, Brilliant Law’s Briggs said he has been disappointed by the level of support it has received from universities to bring fresh talent into the business.

“We are very keen on bringing young, fresh, hungry talent into the business and moulding them our way, but as a new business, building links with the universities has proved difficult,” he said.
