Doncaster economy could be set for major boost

MAJOR development schemes which could boost Doncaster’s economy by more than one billion pounds over the next decade will be submitted to Government this month.

The projects have been highlighted as regional investment priorities in a list published by the Sheffield City Region Local Transport Body.

Six of the 19 key transport and infrastructure schemes set to go to the Department of Transport would directly benefit Doncaster.

The DN7 initiative will provide a new link road from junction five of the M18 to Hatfield, improving access to the Don Valley Power Park, the West Moor Link scheme will see the roads heading into Doncaster from junction four of the M18 upgraded and a new A1/A19 Carcroft link road will be built. These major schemes would drive regeneration along the routes by helping a range of new housing and employment developments get off the ground.

The projects also include the continued regeneration of Doncaster’s town centre, improved bus links between Doncaster and Barnsley and further works to improve access to Doncaster’s international airport.

This latter Gateway to the Sheffield City Region project will see the final phase of a direct route from the motorway network to Robin Hood Airport through the already committed Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS).

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster and Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership board member, said: “These important projects can unlock the potential of development sites right across the borough and help create thousands of new jobs and homes.

“Delivering jobs and growth is one of my top priorities and these schemes put forward are important infrastructure projects that will create the right conditions to attract new investment, companies and jobs.”

Once assessed by Government, the schemes will go into further rounds of assessment which will develop funding packages for the 10 year Sheffield City Region programme starting in 2015. It will then be decided which of the schemes go forward.
