Plans revealed for multi-million pound shopping development on derelict site

A NEW shopping development could be built near Leeds with the potential to create up to 130 jobs.
Located on the former Belgrave Works on Town Street in Stanningley, the multi-million pound scheme is being proposed by West Register (Realisations), a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
In addition to a 1,900 sq m discount food store, the development includes eight smaller shops and around 240 car parking spaces.
Before a planning application is submitted, the developer is holding a consultation event on December 4 at St. John’s Methodist Church in Stanningley.
Nick Denton from reesdenton, development consultants and leasing agents for West Register, said: “This land has been derelict since the previous occupiers relocated in 2009 and the former buildings were demolished. West Register is planning a major investment to help bring this vacant, brownfield land back into use and create a significant number of job opportunities.
“As well as a discount food operator, we are in discussions with a number of retailers that are interested in trading from the other eight units. Our aim is to provide local shopping opportunities in an area that is currently poorly served, helping to keep trade within Stanningley and offering residents more choice and convenience.”
He added: “West Register wants to find out what members of the community think about the proposal, so we hope that people will take the opportunity to visit us on the 4th and speak to the team.”
Subject to the feedback received at the consultation, West Register is aiming to submit a planning application by the end of this year.
If approved by Leeds City Council, construction is likely to start in mid-2014, which means the new shops could be open by next Christmas.
