Sweet Haribo deal for JPG

CIVIL and structural engineering consultancy JPG has landed the contract to advise HARIBO on the delivery of its new multi-million pound manufacturing facility in West Yorkshire.

Yorkshire-based JPG is consulting with the German manufacturer to help deliver specialist production facilities on the 722,000 sq ft site and put in place appropriate structural design solutions.

This involves substantial design work to support four production buildings, an energy conservation centre, silo buildings, a despatch building and a gatehouse.

The factory will have capacity to produce some 48,000 tonnes of sweets annually, predominantly serving the UK.

The £92m investment is creating nearly 300 jobs and has been backed by a £6.4m grant from the government’s Regional Growth Fund.

JPG has already advised the sweet manufacturer over the acquisition of the site due to its historic involvement on neighbouring projects at Pioneer Business Park, Wakefield Europort and Normanton Industrial Estate.

Chris Harding, director at JPG, said: “Our previous work in the area means that we already have extensive knowledge of the local landscape and this has assisted Haribo enormously in planning civil and structural elements for its very specific facility demands. We also have extensive knowledge of the food industry with projects undertaken for ARLA and Carlsberg. The structural and material demands for any food manufacturing facility are very complex due to hygiene, processing and temperature requirements.”

JPG is part of a design team including The Harris Partnership as architect and Silcock Leedham as mechanical and electrical engineer.
