Government approves Humber’s first UTC

THE Government has given the go ahead for the Humber’s first University Technology College (UTC).

The £11m investment will provide young people with the specialist skills required for careers in the engineering and renewable energy industries.

Work is expected to start this spring and complete next September.

The Humber UTC, a state-funded school aimed at 14 to 19-year-olds, with backing from businesses and education partners, will be built in Scunthorpe.

It is thought that 70 new jobs will be created.

The college board include Able UK, Tata Steel, Centrica Storage, Total Lindsey Oil Refinery, North Lincolnshire Council, the University of Hull, North Lindsey College and Outwood Grange Academies Trust.

The green light for the UTC comes hot on the heels of the Government approving the £450m Able Marine Energy Park.

Brendan Conlan, operations and engineering manager at Centrica Storage, which is supporting the Humber Renewables & Engineering University Technical College, said: “At Centrica we are delighted to be supporting UTCs, which are changing the nature of education and giving students an experience they cannot get anywhere else. The UTCs offer students the opportunity to join British engineering as the next generation of technicians, engineers and business leaders.

“As an employer and engineer I am very pleased that Centrica will play an active role in shaping our UTC’s curriculum and activities to ensure students have the correct skills and knowledge for the future.”

He added: “We welcome the approval of six new UTCs and look forward to seeing the movement continue to grow, and I encourage employers across the UK to support its growth.”
