Plans for major new retail scheme announced

PROPERTY developer Wykeland has teamed up with the Ramsden Group to create a major new retail scheme in Grimsby.

The Ramsden Group, established in 1946, wants to create a new local centre, including around 64,000 sq ft of retail space plus mezzanine, leisure units and parking for around 200 cars on land in Cleethorpe Road and which is partly occupied by the Ramsden Superstore.

The regeneration project is a partnership between Ramsdens and Hull-based Wykeland, and an application for outline planning consent is due to be submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council in the next few weeks.

Once completed, the developers are confident it will attract new investment and new retailers to Grimsby, as well as providing new café and restaurant facilities.

Dudley Ramsden, the Ramsden’s chairman, described the project as “one of the most exciting regeneration schemes for inner Grimsby” for some years. He added: “We see the new Cleethorpe Road Retail Park bringing new life to this part of town.

“The actual development schedule will be announced following the Council’s decision, hopefully in the early part of next year, when we will have a more accurate view of the likely design and construction programme.

“During construction, there will be jobs for local people and opportunities for local contractors. The scheme will provide new permanent employment in an area where unemployment is very high.”
