WYG dives into Victorian baths redevelopment

ENGINEERING consultancy WYG, based in Leeds, has been appointed by London Borough of Lewisham to provide structural engineering expertise for a new £10.6m leisure facility.

The redevelopment will see the Victorian baths brought back to life with a part demolition and new build offering the latest leisure facilities to the residents of Forest Hill.

The new leisure centre will keep the existing frontage, which will be refurbished to form the main entrance.

The new building will include a six lane 25m pool, a 16.7m learner pool, fitness gym, two studios, a community room and café.

WYG will be involved in the analysis and design of the development throughout the estimated two year project, which is scheduled to start at the end of the year.

Tony Driscoll, regional director at WYG Group, said: “This is a technically challenging project with the added constraint of the retained Victorian frontage building, however our civil and structural engineers have been involved in many award-winning projects, including the recently completed Corby East Midlands International Pool.

“This project is close to the hearts of the community and will be a delight to work on as we will be giving the residents of Forest Hill the replacement leisure centre they very much need.”

The pool was originally built in 1885 but was closed in 2006 due to health and safety concerns.
