Listed building sold for new development

THE only grade I listed building in Middlesbrough is being sold in a deal brokered by the Leeds office of property consultants Drivers Jonas Deloitte.

Acklam Hall will be bought by a local developer if planning approval is granted for a new mixed-use development including healthcare, business and residential elements.

The 36.5 acre site is being sold for an undisclosed sum by Middlesbrough College, which occupied the building until 2008, and Middlesbrough Council.

David Powell, assistant director at Drivers Jonas Deloitte in Leeds, said: “Middlesbrough College and Middlesbrough Council have proved through this sale that public sector organisations can drive nventive, commercial, value generating solutions for their surplus assets even during the downturn and recession.

“Both the college and council will be able to reinvest the receipt into providing core services at a time when central government funding is likely to be reduced in real terms.

“Should planning permission be granted to the developer, the Hall will be saved for future generations and the site will become an integral and high profile part of the Middlesbrough landscape with a range of public facing facilities benefiting many local residents.”
