Consultancies created to take advantage of low carbon economy

YORKSHIRE is taking several steps forward in becoming world’s leading centre of excellence for carbon reducing technology with the launch of two new specialist consultancies.

The launches of CarbonReady and the International Centre for Legal Compliance (ICLC), which will take place on November 26 at the IoD’s new home 3 Albion Place, are predicted to attract the attention of countries such as China and India, which are both looking to heavily invest in low-carbon technologies.

Carbon Ready – a wholly owned subsidiary of Oakland Consulting – is an independent consultancy that provides comprehensive business expertise on the broad range of topics required to address climate change and carbon management.

ICLC is a research group established by William Ho – a partner in Leeds-based solicitors Burton Burton and Ho (BBH) and barrister Jeremy Barnett, head of regulatory breach at St Pauls Chambers Leeds.

Together with the advisory board which includes a number of leading academics in business, law and computing, ICLC will focus on helping Asian businesses understand new regulation that will arise in this international market.

Legal advice and services will be offered by the newly formed CarbonReady Legal, a division of BBH.

The launches are being supported by representatives of Sharon Bamford, chief executive of the UK India Business Council (UKIBC) as well as vice Consul General Wang Shutong.

Ms Bamford said: “Engaging businesses to address the challenges of climate change is an integral part of the UK India Business Council’s agenda.

“We seek out companies that are at the forefront of providing clean technology solutions. The UKIBC hopes to have a greater presence in Leeds to facilitate increased trade and investment flows between the region and India.”

Adrian Strain, head of international relations at Leeds City Council, which is also supporting the launches said: “Leeds City Council is pleased to support this new initiative which will see lawyers, academics and business people in our city take the lead in helping two of the fastest developing nations in the world combat the increasingly important issues of climate change and carbon emissions.”

He added: “It will see Yorkshire become an international centre of excellence in carbon issues which will have positive affects for local businesses and education.

“The initiative will build on Leeds’ already strong relationship with China through our partner city of Hangzhou and we would welcome the arrival of a UKIBC base in the city to strengthen our ties with India.”
