Contractor raring to go at £27.5m university new build

CONSTRUCTION of a £27.5m university building in Huddersfield is well under way as construction firm Morgan Sindall is appointed to the build.

The 7,500 sq ft teaching facility will be located in Huddersfield town centre, opposite the Shorehead roundabout.

The £27.5m site will be the new home of the university’s Law School, and the School of Music, Humanities and Media.

It will also link into the university’s Student Central Building which was completed in January 2014, with a pricetag of £22.5m.

The gateway building to both the university and the town centre was granted planning consent by Kirklees Council in April 2015 and is now getting underway.

Chris Brown, operations director at Morgan Sindall’s Leeds office, said: “This is a key building for both the university and the town. It is a fantastic project to be involved with and our appointment builds on the existing relationship we have with the University of Huddersfield.

“We very much look forward to getting on site and creating this amazing building which will mark Huddersfield out as a forward-thinking town.”

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan said: “We are delighted to be working with Morgan Sindall on the latest major development to our campus.

“The University is committed to ensuring that we provide the best possible environment for the growing number of students who choose to study here and contribute so positively to the local economy.

“We are also committed to our town, and are very pleased to be able to work with local businesses on a building that will take such a prominent place in the Huddersfield landscape.”

Upon completion, by the beginning of 2017, the building will provide new teaching space including large tiered lecture theatres.
