Woodworking firm fined after employee breaks both legs

A LEEDS woodworking firm, Spa Laminates, has been fined for safety breaches by the Health and Safety Executive.

Stacks of boards fell onto two employees and inured both of them. Leeds Magistrates’ Court heard that in 2012,  two employees were working alongside a forklift truck during a lifting operation.

Hitting a stack of boards, the truck knocked them into one worker, who fell into a second stack and incapacitated the second worker.

One employee broke both his legs.

After an investigation, the Health and Safety Executive prosecuted Spa Laminates.

The firm pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £7,438 costs.
