Sports Direct snaps up Huddersfield golf retailer

HUDDERSFIELD’s Direct Golf has been bought out of administration bySports Direct after a battle for control with its founder, John Andrew.
Direct Golf UK and its parent company, Powerhouse Golf, were put into administration earlier this month.
This was due to apparent accounting irregularities which rendered the business insolvent, according to The Guardian.
It had been reported that Begbies Traynor would be the administrators, appointed by chief executive John Andrews.
Philip Duffy, the managing director of Duff & Phelps who was appointed as joint administrator, said the company had come under “serious cash flow pressure as a result of significant accounting issues that will require further detailed investigations by the administrators”.
Allegations surfaced at the time that Ashley’s firm and Direct Golf founder and owner, John Andrew were in the midst of a fight for control of the firm.
Last year, Direct Golf, which has 20 stores, made a deal with Sports Direct in which the larger firm took a 25% stake in the company and funded the firm’s expansion plans.
Direct Golf was founded by PGA Professional Mr Andrew in 1991 and employs around 180 people including head office and store colleagues.
