Cellino launches appeal against Leeds United ownership ban

MASSIMO CELLINO, chairman of Leeds United, has launched an attempt to overturn the ownership ban from the Football League.

After being found guilty of tax evasion under Italian law in June, Mr Cellino was disqualified under the Football League’s owners’ and directors’ test.

In a statement the Football League said: “The Football League can confirm that the legal representatives of Leeds United President, Massimo Cellino have lodged an appeal against his recent disqualification under the League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test.

“The appeal will be heard in due course by an independent League Arbitration Panel.”

The 59 year-old took over Leeds United in April 2014, but has spent much of the time since then in disputes with th courts and the Football League.

It has not been confirmed how long this ban could go on for, but Mr Cellino will be involved in the day-to-day running of the club until the appeal is heard.

Mr Cellino was initially banned from April to May this year for tax evasion in relation to non-payment of import duty on his yacht.
