Sheffield United’s MD departs in boardroom reshuffle

LEAGUE ONE football club Sheffield United has removed its managing director as it reshuffled its board of directors.
Malachy Brannigan has left the club with immediate effect after the club’s co-chairmen decided that “to get Sheffield United Football Club back on track, change is needed”.
Mr Brannigan was appointed in January 2014 having spent five years at Derby County – four of which overlapped with Nigel Clough’s spell as manager. Mr Clough was Sheffield United’s manager until his 19-month spell in charge ended in May.
Former chairman David Green has been named vice chairman with responsibility for football operations, and Martin Green joins the board as vice chairman for commercial and administration.
Simon Westbury will be acting administration manager for the rest of its financial year and Carl Shieber joins the technical board as its player contract negotiation specialist.
Sheffield United’s co-chairmen Kevin McCabe and Jim Phipps said: “We know and trust David and Martin. We value their opinions and know they will be unflinching in helping us confront the need to change within the Club. We hope supporters welcome these appointments together with Simon and Carl, to get this great club back where we all want it to be.”
Sheffield United is owned by Scarborough Group founder Kevin McCabe and Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League in 2007 and dropped down into League One four seasons later. This is their fifth season in the third flight and are currently 12th, having won seven of their 20 league matches.
