Major setback for regeneration project in Bradford

PLANS to convert the former Bradford Odeon into a live music venue have suffered a setback after the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) knocked back a bid for £5m.
The group behind the £15.6m project, Bradford Live, had hoped the 4,000-capacity venue could have been open by 2018.
“We remain committed to the Odeon project and what its transformation will mean to the regeneration of our City,” said Lee Craven, director at Bradford Live.
“This is obviously a disappointment. We’ll be meeting the HLF Yorkshire team next week to find out where our bid fell short, and, based on that feedback, consider reapplying later this year.  And we’ll continue to work closely with Bradford Council.”
The site, on Godwin Street, was completed in 1930 as the New Victoria and was the third largest cinema in Britain when it opened. It closed in 1968, and remained unused for 20 years.
