Tesco ends 24-hour openings in stores across UK

SUPERMARKET group Tesco is ending 24-hour opening at 76 of its stores around the UK.
The decision means around one-fifth of the group’s UK stores will be affected.
The move is thought to reflect the change in people’s shopping habits with more of us shopping online and fewer going out to the stores in person.
The impact on staffing levels is expected to be minimal as the company will continue to replenish its shelves during the night.
Tony Hoggett, retail director for Tesco, said: “We’re always thinking about how to serve our customers better in each of our stores and with the growth of online grocery shopping, these stores saw very few customers during the night.
“It makes much more sense for colleagues at those stores to focus on replenishing the shelves instead and making sure they’re fully stocked when they open their doors at 6am.”
Further operational reviews could be in the pipeline as the company said it was keen to find ways “that will make shopping at Tesco a better experience for customers”.
The changes will take effect between March 14 and April 11, 2016.
It added: “There will be no other change to the night operation in these shops, so the impact to colleagues is expected to be minimal.”
The move is part of the company’s attempt to claw back its pre-eminent place on the high street, which has been challenged by the likes of Aldi and Lidl in recent times.
There are currently about 400 Tesco stores which open 24 hours a day.
Yorkshire stores affected include:
- Sheffield Infirmary Superstore
- Bridlington Superstore
- Catterick Garrison Superstore
- Goole Boothferry Road Superstore
- Halifax Aachen Way Superstore
