Record footfall for refurbished Merrion Centre

The Merrion Centre welcomed a record number of visitors through its doors in December, with almost 1.1 million shoppers choosing the mall.

Its strong performance continued into the new year, with numbers up 3% year-on-year to more than 946,000 in January. Visitor numbers rose 11% year-on-year to more than 1 million last month.

Last year, the Merrion Centre – which opened in Leeds city centre in 1964 – completed its Merrion Way redevelopment, including refurbishment of its multi-storey car park and an extension to its existing Morrisons store.

It also welcome new tenants, including. Smoke Barbeque, Dunkin Donuts, an NHS clinic, Bonmarché and Select.

Edward Ziff, chairman and chief executive of Town Centre Securities PLC, said: “It’s been a positive period for the Merrion Centre and it’s great to see so many people taking advantage of our fantastic shops, services and ever growing leisure offering.

“The Christmas period was particularly busy for us helped by the regeneration of Merrion Way and the new tenant line up and we’re delighted that increased visits has continued into 2016. We strive to offer choice and variety to our customers and will continue to extend our offering.”
