My Yorkshire: Philip Way, Mills & Reeve

Philip Way is head of the Leeds office of national law firm Mills & Reeve, which has recently announced record revenues of £87.2m.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I live in my home town of Wakefield.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

If I had to choose one it would be the coast for its variety and the happy times I have had there throughout my life.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

Dinner at the Box Tree in Ilkley.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

A wedding anniversary meal at the Burlington at the Devonshire Arms.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

Determination.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region?

The tallest ever Englishman was a Yorkshireman – William Bradley (1787-1820). William was born in Market Weighton and had 12 siblings. By the age of 20 he was seven feet nine inches tall. William appeared at fairs all over England and, with true Yorkshire nous, promoted himself as the Yorkshire giant and charged people a shilling a time to shake his hand.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

Barbara Hepworth. I find her iconic single form outside the UN building in New York very moving.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

Everywhere else is a bitter disappointment!
