New dawn for Leeds’ independents as the city grows its retail credentials

INDEPENDENT businesses in Leeds are thriving off the city’s retail regeneration, with one of the first independents to set up shop in the Corn Exchange celebrating six years of successful trading at the historic complex.
Yellow Sunrise is one of 28 unique stores located beneath the stunning domed roof of the Grade I listed building.
The shop – which sells everything from Indian rugs to Moroccan glass lanterns – was first launched in Granary Wharf, later moved into Leeds Shopping Plaza and now has a treasured spot in the city’s independent shopping hub.
Owner Maria Huang said: “Six years ago we decided to move here because the building is so lovely, it is just magnificent. We’re happy to be in one of the historical buildings in Leeds, protected by the Government.”
All of Maria’s wares are handmade and strongly support fair trade companies and wholesalers.
“Our products are really authentic, handmade products and ornaments, and smelly things like incense and essential oils, scented candles, home accessories, wall hangings, lighting,” she added.
With Victoria Quarter’s luxury shopping addition, Victoria Gate set to open next month, what does Maria make of Leeds’ growing shopping scene?
“I think we all aim differently, like especially our products – the feedback from our customers when they come into the shop is that they want something different, unique and handmade – not perfect.”
I think Leeds will be better for it, more bustling I think. With so many shops opening up, John Lewis, Trinity, there will be more places for people to eat and more shops for people to shop!”
Owner of The Great Yorkshire Shop – also located at The Corn Exchange – Aeneas Brewster agrees that the Victoria Gate development will provide healthy competition for the independent shops.
He said: “One of the reasons I opened shop here was because of the development around the Corn, the markets and the Victoria Gate quarter.”
“I saw it as a bit of an opportunity because of the John Lewis store opening, which I think will bring more shoppers into Leeds.”
