Cultural hub puts young artists in the frame

EAST STREET ARTS have unveiled a new cultural space for young aspiring artists near the upcoming Victoria Gate development in Leeds city centre.

Developer of Victoria Gate, Hammerson, has supported East Street Arts in transforming the previously disused space of 130 Vicar Lane into a hub celebrating local arts and culture.

The joint enterprise saw a collaboration between Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) and Leeds College of Building offering up building materials and expertise in the development of the site.

As well as showcasing the work of local artists, the large open space will house resident artists Alison Smith and a community-led open access print workshop, Leeds Print Workshop.

The work of Goat Creative will also be displayed permanently after the group won over the judges at East Street Art with their large, unique mural for the face of the unit.

Community executive at Hammerson, James Rogers said: “The aim of the space is to provide a fantastic space in Leeds city centre which artists can use. It will also give young people an opportunity to showcase their talent and to really create a vibrant community space for young people.”

“In terms of the mural’s colours, it’s a very vibrant piece of work, it’s a good design and it’s reasonably in keeping with buildings on Vicar Lane in terms of the style and I just think it’s a really fantastic eye catching piece.”

The exhibition – which is located near the new Victoria Gate development – is now open to the public and soon will be a hive of activity as East Street Arts develop their programme of activity for the space.

“I think having initiatives like this demonstrates that Hammerson, in terms our brand, isn’t just luxury retail, we are also keen to support local groups organisations and the local community,” he added.
