Hull City of Culture 2017 gets the Monopoly treatment

A New Hull-themed Monopoly board – which is being manufactured to celebrate the UK’s City of Culture 2017 – will use a public vote to decide on the playing tokens.

The public have been invited to vote for new Monopoly tokens that will “define and sum up” Hull’s heritage cultural status.

The current playing tokens like the famous Scottie dog and top hat, will be replaced with the likeness of at least one famous person associated with the city as well as cultural symbols such as a football or a toad.

Since the vote opened, other tokens such as a bollard, a pattie and a biplane have been suggested by locals.

One of the producers of the board Benjamin Thompson, said: “We have a blank canvas on this and a totally open mind. We want to hear from the great Hull public on what they see as Hull culture and we will embody this in the new board.”

The board – which is being remade by Winning Moves UK –  will see famous Monopoly streets like Mayfair and Park Lane handed over to Hull landmarks like The Humber Bridge and The Deep.

Even the Chance and Community Chest cards will be Hull themed too, for example instead of being sent to Monopoly jail, one unlucky player could find themselves exiled ‘across The Humber Bridge into deepest Lincolnshire.’

Though a Hull Monopoly board has already been produced by Hasbro in 2004, Winning Moves wanted to pay a “huge and respectful nod to the past” whilst focusing on the future of the UK’s City of Culture.

“The Hull Monopoly board of 2004 was very much for that time. Since then the city has grown in national and international status culminating in next year’s big celebrations.” Benjamin added.
