My Yorkshire: Roger Haworth, Commercial Property Partners

Roger Haworth is a partner at Sheffield-based Commercial Property Partners
Where do you live/where are you from?
I live in Dore in the South-West of Sheffield.
What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
I have always enjoyed visiting Sandsend near Whitby. It’s a great spot on the Yorkshire coast.
What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
There is still plenty of regeneration to do in areas affected by industrial decline. I would like to see these areas refreshed by the building of new industrial spaces for the region’s thriving manufacturing industry or by the creation of more office spaces.
What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
It has to be Vero Gusto on Norfolk Row in Sheffield. It’s an ideal place for a business lunch.
What is your most Yorkshire trait
As I’m not originally from Yorkshire I can’t really comment… but my colleagues are very careful with their money!
Favourite piece of trivia about the region
Yorkshire has a larger population than New Zealand.
What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
It has to be Danny Willett after his performance at the Masters this year.
Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
There’s an ongoing stereotype that people from Yorkshire are very simple-minded and stuck in our ways which is really not the case. It undermines the forward-thinking, entrepreneurial spirit and creativity of so many people that live and do business here!
What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
I would have to steal some of the buildings from Manchester city centre. Not that Yorkshire is lacking in this department, but the Central Library and Beetham Tower are both iconic pieces of architecture and it would be great to see more buildings like this in our cities
What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?
Yorkshire wine, although I’m not sure it really counts as ‘overrated.’
