5 things to do in Yorkshire this weekend
LOOKING for something to do this weekend, other than the obvious Christmas shopping? We’ve compiled a list of various events spread across Yorkshire for you to enjoy.
1. Christmas Festival
Date: Thursday 17th November – Friday 23rd December
Location: City centre, York
The York Christmas Festival is back and bigger than ever with plans to transform the city into a winter wonderland with fairs, family fun and festive events.
From the Snowman at the York Barbican to panto at York Theatre Royal and the Grand Opera House, there will be plenty of entertainment on offer at the festival.
St Nicholas Fair will be lining the streets with snug wooden chalets and twinkling lights, selling unique gifts including jewellery, homewares, crafts, local wines and cheeses.
2. Christmas Illuminations
Date: Sunday 20th November
Location: City centre, Sheffield
It’s time to get festive in Sheffield as the Christmas lights are switched on at the special annual event. From 2pm to 6.30pm, there will be choirs, Santa’s grotto, carolling, pantomime, street entertainment, Christmas markets, craft activities, fairground rides and much more.The official switch on will be held at the Peace Gardens stage at 5:30pm.
3. FantastiCon
Date: Saturday 19th – Sunday 20th November
Location: Guildhall, Hull
FantastiCon is a mixed convention of science fiction, fantasy, virtual reality, board gaming and retro gaming. Throughout the weekend, there will be a cash prize cosplay competition, stage shows, live music, book readings, late night DJs, a late bar, special guests and a world first in holographic technology being shown. Nightly NERF wars are also set to take place.
4. The Great Yorkshire Teddy Bear event
Date: Sunday 20th November
Location: Hilton Hotel, Sheffield
From 10:30am – 3pm, the Hilton Hotel will be bringing the world’s finest teddy bears to Yorkshire, showcasing the work of over 50 exhibitors.
Expect antique bears, fine collectables, top teddy bear shops, teddy bear jewellery and bear making supplies within the stunning surroundings of the quayside hotel.
5. Mary Poppins the Musical
Date: Friday 18th – Saturday 19th November
Location: The Alhambra Theatre, Bradford
Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s multi award-winning musical Mary Poppins has floated into Yorkshire this month, with exclusive performances taking place this weekend. The magical story of the world’s favourite Nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane will be dazzling the stage with impressive choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs until December 10th.
