Works starts on £3m York waste facility

WORK to construct a £3m waste transfer station on the outskirts of York is underway.

The transfer station being built by Yorwaste at its Harewood Whin facility will handle 75,000 tonnes of waste each year when it becomes operational in June.

The waste will come from households in the City of York and Selby District Council areas, as well as Yorwaste’s commercial customers in North Yorkshire.

Waste that comes into the station will be processed by Yorwaste before being taken for final disposal at the new Allerton Waste Recovery Park (AWRP), which is due to start accepting waste next summer.

The waste at AWRP, just off the A1 at Knaresborough, will be recovered into renewable energy.

Steve Barker, managing director of Yorwaste, said: “Working with our contractor Seymour, we are delighted to have started work on the new waste transfer station at Harewood Whin

“With landfill no longer deemed to be the most environmentally friendly option, it is important for waste collection authorities like City of York and Selby District Council to have a local transfer facility where they can initially send their waste.

“This will provide them with greater value for money and help them meet their environmental responsibilities through landfill diversion and more recycling and recovery of waste.

“It will also mean we can offer our commercial customers a more sustainable waste disposal options.”

Yorwaste worked with City of York Council during the planning of the waste transfer station, which is now being built within the confines of the existing operational area at Harewood Whin.

It is anticipated that when Allerton Park is operational, the landfill site at Harewood Whin will be mothballed.
