Young entrepreneur brings home the bacon

AN East Yorkshire-based free-range pork producer has seen sales soar since her business was launched less than a year ago.

Anna Longthorp-Oates of Howden now supplies a network of retail outlets and restaurants across Yorkshire, as well as selling her ‘Happy Trotters’ products at a number of the region’s farmers’ markets.

The young entrepreneur said that when she launched her business she was confident that consumers would be willing to pay more for high welfare, quality pork products, but admits that Jamie Oliver’s recent championing of welfare standards has helped boost sales.

“Pork remains an affordable choice for the Sunday roast and it was good to see Jamie Oliver featuring some of the less fashionable but really good value cuts, including shoulder and belly, in his recent programme,” she said.

“The Jamie Oliver effect is already resulting in a significant increase in demand for British pork, bacon and sausages in the same way that his programme last year about chicken and egg production boosted sales of free range products.”

The Anna’s Happy Trotters range of products is currently available at farmer’s markets at the Humber Bridge, Sheffield and Thorne, as well as through a number of butcher’s shops and retail outlets across Yorkshire.

She also supplies Joffco’s restaurant at Holme Upon Spalding Moor and The King’s Head at Barmby on the Marsh, both of which are located in East Yorkshire.
